Where to file: the family registry division of the local government If the child is born overseas, the birth may be reported to the Korean embassy or consulate or the parents may report it at the family registry of the local government upon return to Korea.
Person who needs to report the birth of the child: father or mother The birth must be reported within one month of birth.
If the child is born in a marriage, the father can report the birth and add the child on his family register.

If the child is born outside of marriage The child may not be added on the father¡¯s family register. The father needs to file for recognition of the child as a foreigner with the Ministry of Justice. If the child is a minor, he/she may become naturalized. If the child is an adult, he/she may apply for permission to naturalize from the Ministry of Justice. Once he/she becomes naturalized, then the child may be added on the father¡¯s family register.
